Last Thursday I went to my third Swap, since moving to Boston. But this time I got to help the amazing ladies behind these swaps get set-up and organized. I spent three hours before the doors were opened organizing the items that would be up for grabs, going through hundreds of bags, sorting out the good from the bad, etc… The bonus to spending these three hours running around - I knew where every item I wanted to try and score was located so I could plot my course ahead of time. That doesn’t mean I got everything I loved, but I ended up landing some great things. (first picture is courtesy of the Swapaholics.)
The outfit for this had to be simple and still work-appropriate since I was running directly from work to the swap. I opted to go with this basic black dress, which I scored at a previous Swap. The flat black boots was an easy option since I wanted something that was a current trend but would also allow me to run around without having blisters by the end of the night. The splash of funky tights was a little bonus and the scarf helped brighten the whole overall look.
My mission for this swap was to add color to my closet. There is just WAY too much black and gray in there, but since I am not shopping and I am trying to be creative with the next 30 for 30 challenge, I figured this would be the place to grab some great colorful additions. What did I score?? A Tucker blouse (real Tucker, not Tucker for Target!), an amazing shell-shaped ring that I am wearing in this post. A pair of straight-legged black denim and a funky colorful skirt. All of these things will be in the 30 for 30, beginning Feb. 1st.
Tip: When shopping, try to stretch your color comfort zone while still staying with the cuts and designs that you are comfortable with.

Katy, your hair and makeup look so amazing! You are becoming such a regular swapaholic! I’m jealous- I wish I could get some ladies together where I live, but I live nowhere. Boo!

You should plan one in your area. They aren’t too difficult to pull off. Just invite a lot of people and have them each bring a bag of clothes. It can start small, but still be tons of fun. I know people who have them as little house-parties. You invite 20 friends and each bring some things to swap.
so great to finally meet you at a Swap event! Those boots are killer - I absolutely love them. The tights were a perfect pop of color too.
No kidding! It only took us 6 months to actually meet in person. Kinda crazy! Look for a blogger meet-up invitation to come soon.
I love Boston I’ve visited once before and got very drunk lol.
What’s a swap marketplace I’m guessing it’s where people come and trade clothes?

Swap is basically a bunch of people bring the stuff they are no longer wearing, it all gets displayed and then the doors are opened and everyone rushes in to find some new gems from the donations. It’s pretty great, and at least here in Boston, there is more and more men’s clothing every time I go.
Great finds!!! Thanks for helping!!!

No problem! I’m up for helping any time. It was fun.
That looks like so much fun! Great way to try out new clothes without buying them! Love the watch x

Exactly my thought. Sometimes I grab things that I have been dying to try but wouldn’t buy because I’m not sure how it would actually look on. Worse comes to worse I bring it to the next swap and someone else gets to try it.
I really like that ring and those tights are fab. I always thought that tie-dye tights were a little too Grateful Dead for me but you sure did prove me wrong. I love them.
I know! I was a little hesitant about the tights too. I mean they are cool looking in my drawer but not so such about in real life. I definitely only wear them when they are a little pop of color, not when they would be the main focus.
what a great score on the Tucker blouse! can’t wait to see it. i’m glad the swap was a success. i like those funky tye-dye tights. interesting way to add a splash of color!

Thanks! I know they are having a swap in Austin during the Fashion conference that takes place the weekend before SXSW. You should make a trip there! It’s not a huge drive, right?
Great finds…Love your outfit…the tights are so cool and the rings and scarf add so much fun to the perfect staple dres.

This is good advice…as I tend to gravitate toward grey and black myself. My entire blog year will be devoted to stretching my color boundaries! I wish someone in my area organized events like this. What does it take to get one started?

Get ready. I’m no Suze but I’m giving it a real try in the weeks ahead.
I love a good swap! I’ve also started doing them through the mail with other bloggers. That’s expecially fun to get to see how they wore it too.

Go for it. You just need an open space, some tables, rolling racks and lots of hangers.

Awesome. Hopefully you landed at least one amazing item from the swap.
It’s making me sad to go around reading Boston blogs and hearing about all you fabulous ladies getting together without me. So glad to hear you had great swapping luck, I can’t wait to see you wear your Tucker blouse!
Becca - we miss you around here. But on the bright side there are so many fashion bloggers in CA that you are bound to find a community out there to get involved with. How’s the move going and the job search?
Looks like a good time, and so great you were able to get a sneak peek beforehand!

It takes hours to read all the posts. But there are some don’t miss responses in the last round, and so many new blogs to explore thanks to the last question.
Argh, I’m so jealous of all you Boston ladies for getting to have such an awesome swap! Of course when I lived in Boston I had no idea there was such a burgeoning style & swapping community all around me, so I totally missed out. Oh well, I’ll just have to hope for another swap sometime when I’m visiting the in-laws in MA.
I can’t wait to see more of your swap scores - it sounds like you made out like a bandit!

Let me know when you are coming into town and maybe we can at least have a blogger meet-up or something. The whole group of us are trying to get better at meeting regularly.
This is my first time commenting on your new site! YAY!

I totally agree! I went shopping this weekend and tried on everything that I was attracted to. OK, so I ended up buying perhaps the “safest” items, but it was fun to try new things.

Thanks for commenting! And next time buy a safe but not the safest item. I’m already amazed at what adding a little color has done to my way of looking at clothes.
Good review, Each and every single point is good enough. Thanks for sharing with us your wisdom.
