Well, this is my last outfit post, I think, before the winter 30 for 30 starts on Feb. 1st. Last weekend I picked my 30 items, separated them out in my closet and began envisioning the various possible combinations. Get ready because for me the theme of this challenge is color incorporation. Skimming back through the various winter outfits I’ve sported there is one constant trend - the color black. I love it. I wear a ton of it. But it is time to start brightening up that basic with at least a little bold colorization. The goal is to start small and hopefully by the end of the 30 outfits to be much more able to wear color and lots of it. (More on that when I post my items on the 1st.)
This is one of those outfits that ended up looking better from the front than it did from the back. Because of the nature of the material it is a little tight in the rear making an unflattering back image. (trust me, you’re glad I didn’t post it.) And it is true that this dress is a little shapeless and it is so oversized that I look a little shapeless too. Hmm… I’m thinking I may try to re-style this for Project Restyle, which I have been a major slacker in contributing to thus far in the year. Either that or I try to find it a better home.
Tip: Always check how an outfit looks from the front and the back before walking out the door in the morning.

I honestly dont think I could do the 30 for 30 challenge. I admire all you women who can! It would be so good for my bank balance if I could do it, maybe someday…
As for the restyle challenge, I think that dress would make a really cute short sweater, kind of cropped… just a thought*
Good call on the sweater… Now to figure out how to crop it without having the whole dang thing unravel.
I really like your hair here.
I like the black dress and gray boots.
(BTW I Like your new banner and layout)

shapeless? nah, this outfit is fierce in my opinion
i think if you didn’t have the belt, it would look shapeless, but this looks so pulled together & chic. especially love how it looks with your boots!

i love sweater dresses too but i always have to wear them with skinnies or faux leather trousers as they always come up short on me :/

My haircut, and my outfits look soooo much better from the front than the back. I suffer in pants what can only be referred to as “diaper bottom,” which may explain my preference towards dresses.
Color will do you good! Like you, winter is my dark season, I prefer monochromatic greys, navy and all shades of midnight to retain the heat in the cold. But Reva from Revas Rags 2 Roses stipulated that color worn is color therapy to combat SAD. So may be worth a try (or a move to Florida).
Thank you for commenting on my blog, and of course please discuss this topic! Please put it out there as it is something that would do well to be stirred up. I’ll post a link to you when you do. Thanks so much! -Bella Q

Thanks Bella. And I feel your pain about pants. I tend to lean more and more towards skirts and dresses since they don’t have the same problem areas that pants do. But even some dresses, like this one, can be an issue.
You look gorgeous! I love that you added gray boots instead of black, it just adds another dimension to the outfit.
I can’t wait to see your 30 for 30 outfits!
So true, I almost went with the black boots but had to tell myself to branch out and I am glad I did. It certainly created an entirely different look and feel with the gray ones.
Can’t wait to see your 30-for-30 outfits! Really like your boots! x

Thanks! The boots will be in this round of the 30 for 30. I’m a little obsessed with them.
I totally agree. I’ve had outfits I’ve photographed from the side and the back and as a result, NEVER posted the pic!

Black is definitely my winter go-to as well, but I’m almost most inspired by outfits that involve an interesting or unexpected mix of color, so I’m trying to branch out a little more from my dark neutral comfort zone. It’s definitely also something I’ve been keeping in mind while getting ready for the 30 for 30.
I think belting this sweater a little higher might give it more of a defined shape, but I certainly don’t think it leaves you looking shapeless as is. The straight hair and gray boots bring some sleekness to the overall look as well, and help to balance the oversized knit of the dress.

Thanks! I actually love the look when my hair is straight but now that it is getting longer it takes so much time to straighten it out that it is not worth it most days.
I love sweater dresses, but I find they are either not super flattering in the front or, notoriously, in the back, so I feel your pain!

I agree… I’m always drawn to them but they never look as good on me as they do on the hanger. Such a shame.
I had one of those ‘good from the front, bad from the back’ outfits on yesterday. For some reason, the jersey fabric/belt combo bunched oddly on my backside and made things look weird from the side. But I really liked it from the front, so I just pretended that the other views didn’t really exist…
LOL. Yeah the only trouble with that approach is all the other people we force into dealing with our good from the front, bad from the back outfit. It is so tempting to just think who cares I’m doing it anyway. This dress lasted half a day on me before I realized and had to make a switch. *sigh* I loved it from the front and it is SO comfortable.
Such good advice…I rarely look at the back…but most likely there are many things I would not wear if I did look at the back!! This is a very cute look! I love watching all of you do the 30/30…but it would just frustrate me!!

We need 30 for 30 sideline cheerleaders too because at some point it is a little much to handle. So no worries you are doing it yourself, just motivate us to keep at it!
color sounds fun! you’re really making me want to commit to 30 for 30!
Give it a try, or make it a little easier if it is your first time and do a 15 for 15. I find it so helpful to refocus on the fact that a lot can be done with a little.
Ha, I have decided that I have to add colour to my outfits this time too! I did the 30 for 30 last summer and was a bit shocked by how little colour I actually included, I guess I thought it would be easier to make multiple outfits if it was more colour neutral, but not this year!! Wish me luck, lol. Good luck to you too!

Loved the questions this week! Can’t wait to read everyone’s answers! Cute picture Katy! You’re so cute!
I totally have a shapeless sweater dress that I need to score a fabulous belt like yours for!
The belt certainly helps the situation, although I do think it is a little bit of a lost cause. They just aren’t made to be that flattering. Try a chunky belt and see if that helps!
I just want to mention I’m new to weblog and seriously loved you’re web blog. Almost certainly I’m want to bookmark your blog post . You absolutely have tremendous article content. With thanks for sharing with us your web site.
A thoughtful opinion and ideas I will use on my blog. Youve obviously spent a while about this. Thank you!
