Since getting my iPhone and having the countless extra applications available, that you can’t get yet as a Droid user, I’ve gone a little app crazy. I think at last count there are over 80 apps on my phone. Now, I’m finally beginning to understand the ‘there’s an app for that’ tagline. Some of the things I’ve downloaded, tried to use and then deleted almost as quickly as I pressed the install button. Others have become a lifeline.
In no particular order, here are my favorite iPhone applications. (stay tuned for posts on my favorite fashion and fitness apps.)
- Instagram: This photography app allows you to capture images on the fly and then tweak them with
all sorts of different colorizations. You can send the images to Twitter and Facebook, and also follow your friends who are posting their pictures. Let’s be honest, this app is one of the main things that convinced me to get an iPhone instead of upgrade my Droid.
- Shazam: Ever hear one of those songs on the radio and wish you could figure out who sings it? Or maybe you are shopping, heard a song and wondered what the lyrics are. This app listens to the song and then tells you the artist and album. It will also list the lyrics as they are sung.
- Whatsapp: Text for free with anyone else who also has the application. This is the perfect thing for all those friends who won’t pay for texting but you’d like to send a short message to from time to time.
- Kindle: Read books online and purchase them with one click through Amazon. You can also archive the books you have already read so that they won’t take up space on your smartphone. And new books automatically download without prompting.
- Yelp: Looking for a new restaurant to try or a place to get a haircut? This application lets you find local retailers, restaurants and service providers and read reviews written by others. It also allows you to write your own reviews and map the best route to the location.
- IMDb: Looking up any movie, TV show, actor or actress has never been easier. See a great flick and want to know who directed it and what else he/she has worked on? This is the fastest and best way.

- Wurdle: I’m a little bit of a game fan – I might happen to have too many downloaded. But this one is a favorite and it is at least slightly educational. You need to find as many words as possible by connecting the letters shown. This application helps me win Words with Friends too.
- Facebook: The application is not perfect and while I expect better from Facebook, it does work well. And since it alerts you to when you have a new message, photo tag, or wall post you won’t miss any of that when away from your computer.
- Hootsuite: I’m a big fan of Hootsuite for easy use of Twitter and Facebook. I’d be a totally crazy woman without being able to combine accounts like this. My only hang-up with this app is that it doesn’t allow push notifications yet, so I don’t get a notice if someone replies or DMs me.
- Groupon: If any app is going to get me in trouble with my bank it will be this one. It’s almost to easy to purchase the amazing Groupon deals. In the last few weeks I may or may not have bought three different restaurant deals. And I almost bought a saln package before reminding myself I am growing it out for now.
- FourSquare: I know this app is pretty much ridiculous, but there is something about checking in places, gaining badges and occasionally being rewarded with some discount that has be checking in everywhere I go.

- FruitNinja: Completely useless and yet completely addictive. I need to limit my playing time because time can just flyby when I open up that app. So bad.
- HuluPlus: Missed Once Upon a Time or Jane By Design? I catch it on my phone while running somewhere or when I have a little downtime. And if you can’t watch the whole episode in one sitting it saves your location to return to later. Sweet.

I have a lot of these apps and love them. I can’t believe how long I went without the Instagram app. I use it all the time now! You should check out PicFrame - it’s 99 cents and creates pic collages, which you can then use in Instagram and other photo apps.
I have heard amazing things about Evernote. It’s a way to categorize and make lists and notes. You can tag and label them so everything is sorted by category, and attach pictures to them, etc.
I also like the Groupon app, so I don’t have to print out my Groupons when I buy them, I can just show the barcode to the server and it’s all taken care of on my phone!

Instagram is probably my most-used app! And I love Kindle for iPhone. Everyone seems to tell me that the device is too small for reading, but we basically read in all the other apps on the phone so it doesn’t bother me at all.
