At the end of June I went to Cantigny Park for the first time ever. Despite growing up in the Chicagoland area I had never been to the park and war museum. To be honest, all I had ever heard about it was it had the coolest war tanks that you could climb all over. This glowing review came from my little brothers who visited the place with school groups and no doubt spent the entire time checking out the tanks.

But Cantigny (which is named the 1918 battle of Cantigny in France) is so much more than war tanks. It had some of the most stunning gardens I’ve ever had the privilege to walk through. The grounds were lovely, with three distinct garden areas and plenty of places to sit and eat a picnic meal. The Idea Garden was my favorite spot - filled with colorful flowers, some I had never seen before.
Beyond the war tanks, 1st division war museum and stunning gardens, Cantigny also contains a great historical house tour of Robert R. McCormick’s place of residence. I never knew so much about the publisher of the Chicago Tribune. He was a true renaissance man having composed a number of books, owning several patents and starting both the WGN radio and TV stations.
I could fill posts for days with the pictures I took of the flowers and grounds, but I won’t bore you with all of them. So, here are just a few of my favorites.
