If you’ve been reading this blog in the last two years, you know I swear by the Curly Girl Method to take care of my hair and keep my curls (which are more like defined waves with the length of my hair). This is in no means an exhaustive list of curly girl approved products There are SOOO many products out there that it is difficult to list them all. Plus, companies are often tweaking ingredients so things change from time to time. Be sure to read the ingredient list before purchasing to double check.
Am I missing anything that you absolutely love for your curls? Let me know what other items should be added to the curly girl approved products list.
For Reference, Products to Use/Avoid:
For Shampoos: You want to avoid products that contain the following items in the ingredient list: sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, and sodium laureth sulfate.
For Conditioners: You want to avoid products that contain the following items in the ingredient list: silicone (including dimethicone and cyclomethicone). Look instead for conditioners with emollients (shea butter, a number of natural oils, wheat germ), humectants (panthenol, vegetable glycerine and sorbitol), and moisturizers (amino acids, aloe vera, etc…)
For Styling: You want to stay away from products that include: silicone (including dimethicone and cyclomethicone), parabens, and phthalates.
Check out how I use the Curly Girl Method to get an idea of the routine. Or purchase Curly Girl: The Handbook
by Lorraine Massey. The book talks about the basics of the method and also has specific instruction for different types of curls.

I have Botticelli curls and I use MopTop products exclusively. Also, what makes a HUGE difference is getting a real Deva hair cut and education. I’ve been a Curly Girl all my life and I have never had as amazing hair as I did before my Deva cut. They’re expensive, but absolutely worth it.
P.S. You don’t need an exclusive leave-in conditioner. You can just leave in some of your normal conditioner. It works the same.
You’re a saviour! Thanks for this list. My curly hair are just so unmanageable. I’m sure some of these products help!
I LOVE pillow soft curls!!! But my tried and true has become a little bit of coconut oil, a little but of raw aloe gel, and homemade flax seed gel (1 T flax seed, one cup of water, a chamomile tea bag, boil until it’s gel!)…super nourishing, LITERALLY no chemicals!!
I LOVE this!! I have been wanting to try the burt’s bees shampoo, but have been hesitant…now I am totally going to try it!
Thanks for this product list! Your hair looks amazing!

Your hair is beautiful! I’ve tried the curly girl method but always end up with a lot of build up :/ m
What’s funny is that while my hair is straight (as an arrow) I do kind of wish it was a little curly sometimes, and I wish it was easier to texturize! It’s funny how everyone wants what they don’t have. The curly haired people want straight hair and the straight haired people want some curls haha! xx Adaleta Avdic
Your hair is gorgeous! I’ve always wanted curly hair and this post isn’t helping
what about Tressame Perfectly Undone Conditioner? its silicone free no? Unless they changed the ingredients again.
