As a life-long Chicago sports fan, I know that usually around this time of the year I’m done rooting for my team and have to pick a new team to cheer for on their way to the Big Game. It’s okay, Chicago sports fans are patient and resilient. And even when my team isn’t going all the way, I love watching the games!
But what’s a football game without food? Of course all the traditional, usual game day food is great, but every now and then I like to switch it up. Why not taco bowls for the Big Game? They are simple to make and easy for everyone to enjoy since each person can pick and choose what she wants to add to her bowl. Soft shell? Hard shell? That’s covered too because Old El Paso makes both options.
Taco Bowl Recipe:
The creation of this is more than easy. Take all your ingredients, prepare them and place them into individual bowls. Set up a taco bar, letting your family or party guests go through the line and add personal preferences to to taco bowl. It’s best if you put the meat option, and anything else that is meant to be hot, at the beginning of the line.
Ingredients: (consider some, or all, of these options)
- Meat of your choice - chicken, steak, pork, shrimp. (I went with pork, because it’s delicious and many grocers will sell it all ready seasoned and pulled apart, making your job a little easier. )
- Old El Paso Taco seasoning (Add this to your meat while you are cooking it for a zesty flavor.)
- Mexican rice (I don’t eat rice, so I skipped this one)
- Old El Paso re-fried beans.
- Sauteed veggies - green peppers, red peppers, onions.
- Shredded lettuce.
- Diced tomatoes or cubed cherry tomatoes.
- Shredded cheese.
- Diced or sliced avocados.
- Salsa.
- Sour cream or ranch dressing.
- Old El Paso soft shell bowl or hard shell stand
I love this meal option, because it allows everyone to be happy with his/her meal without you needing to make a million different dishes. You have someone who is dairy free, no worries, they can skip the cheese and sour cream. Someone is gluten free they can go with the hard shell taco. The vegetarian can skip the meat option and load up on veggies. The friend who hates tomatoes won’t be forced to pick them out of the meal.
Plus, not only is it easy to serve, it’s easy to shop for. You know those recipes or meals that require you to shop at three different stores to find everything you need? Not so with this meal! I grabbed all the ingredients, from the taco shells to the avocados, at my local Jewel. In, out, done.
Who are you cheering for this year? And more importantly, what are you making for the Big Game?? Need other game day meal ideas? Check out the featured recipes for more ideas on how to spice up your game day.
