How to Wear a Sweatshirt to Work

The fall weather has me dreaming of pumpkin spice everything and comfy cozy clothing. While I need, and prefer to dress up for work, there are some mornings when comfort wins out over fancy. You know the mornings I’m talking about - the alarm goes off and you cringe and burrow back under the covers. Maybe the air has a chill in it because you left the window open over night, or your coffee didn’t warm you as much as it normally does. Whatever the reason, you’re craving oversized comfortable clothing - a sweatshirt.

Well, last week I had one such morning and reached for this sweatshirt with the cut-off sleeves. I was bound and determined to wear it to work, and not have it look like a tacky sweatshirt in the process.

6 things to consider when wearing a sweatshirt to work:

Dress up the bottom half. I might have opted for a sweatshirt, but I also made sure to wear a skirt instead of a pair of pants. Plus, the pencil skirt helps to give my structure to the look, which a sweatshirt is usually always lacking.

Add a little fancy bling. The biggest factor in pulling off a sweatshirt at work is the accessories you pair with it. Go for a bold statement necklace or a great pair of earrings. It makes it look like you put time and effort into your look even while being in a over-sized sweatshirt.

Do your makeup. It’s amazing to me the things you can get away with wearing when your makeup is on point. Wear a sweatshirt to work and don’t bother with the makeup and people will likely comment that you look tired or sick. Wear a sweatshirt and do your makeup and you’re much more likely to get compliments and have the sweatshirt fly under the radar.

Opt for a fancier than normal sweatshirt. Not all sweatshirts are created equal. I don’t think you should try to get away with wearing the old, holey, college sweatshirt to work and see if that passes the dress code standards. Opt for a solid colored sweatshirt without stains that might have an interesting design element to it - like the side zipper on this, which can be worn zippered or unzipped.

Leave your hair down. There is something about a pony tail or messy bun that screams comfort, which might be great when paired with a dress or for casual weekend wear, but if you are trying to get away with a sweatshirt during the work week, take the effort to style your hair that day and leave it down which tends to give off a more polished look and feel.
