If you have curly hair, then you have probably heard many people with straight hair talk about how much they want curly hair. And while you should take it as a good thing, it can be frustrating because curly hair can be hard to look after! But the good news is that there are many tried and tested tricks that can help you to make having curly hair just that bit easier. It is a good thing; you just have to know how to tame and manage your curls.
Curly Hair Hacks:
Comb Upwards - starting from the bottom and working up
The very first thing that you need to know about curly hair is that you should be using a comb rather than a brush. A brush can lead to frizz, which is not what you need. A comb can take out the tangles, but still help to tame the frizz that some curls will bring. The second thing that you need to know about is combing your hair. How many of you are combing from the root down to the tip? Wrong! You need to be starting at the tips of your hair and combing in sections, upwards. If you start at the root and you have some knots or tangles, then it really can clump together and push all the way down to the tip. If you start at the tip, then it doesn’t compound the hair as you comb the rest.
Experiment with a Diffuser
If you have curly hair but the curls or waves are a little uneven, then it can be frustrating, especially if you just leave it to dry naturally. Leaving it to dry naturally can also leave it looking more flat. You might not want to add volume, but if you look for the best diffuser for curly hair it could help you to add a little bit more volume; embrace your curls! A diffuser can also help to even out the curls that you have but still minimize the frizz. It can take some practice if you’ve not used a diffuser before, but it can look so good.
The best way to use it is to towel-dry your hair, and then twirl your hair with your fingers into the shape that you want, put the hair in the diffuser and go. Do it all over your hair until dry and you’ve got the look that you want. You can even use it on dry hair, as long as you add a little mousse beforehand.
Trim Hair Regularly
If you have split ends, whether your hair is curly or straight, then it can make your hair frizzy, dry, and can even make your hair look uneven, if big chunks come out of it. And when you’ve got curly hair, you’ll want hair that looks healthy and bouncy. Which is why you’ll need to see a hairdresser pretty regularly, to make sure that you steer clear of split ends. A quick trim can make the world of difference.
Use a Serum
Many people with curly hair talk about using a ‘cocktail’ of products on their hair, to see what works best and what doesn’t. But using coconut oil, serum, and mousse, can be a little much for some. But if you want to use any product, then a serum is a good way to go. Serum can smooth down flyaway strands of hair, making your hair look healthier and less dry, as well as adding a silky look to your hair. It can define your curls and separate them which can be a good look if your curls normally look quite clumped and fluffy. Go easy on the seru, though; too much can leave your hair looking a little greasy!
Invest in a Wide-Tooth Comb
It has been stated above that you should be avoiding a brush like the plague and only using a comb. But what is the best kind of comb to have? A wide-tooth comb is a must if you have curls, as it is the most gentle on your curls, and won’t lead to excess frizz like a brush would. It says invest’ but really, they are super cheap. Just make sure that you have one in your beauty arsenal if you are a curly-haired girl.
Use a Leave-In Conditioner
Curly hair can feel quite dry from time to time, simply because in its nature, it isn’t usually silky or glossy. Which is where a leave-in conditioner can come in. The trick is to only apply it on the ends of your hair, though, rather than using the root. Applying at the root can weigh the hair down, meaning that your curls look a little limp. But applying a conditioner to the ends of your hair can help to give them some extra moisture in between hair trims, and give them some extra bounce.
Style Before Bed
If you have curly hair and have ever gone to bed with it wet, then you’ll know what a mistake it will have been when you wake up, am I right? Which is why part of your curly hair routine should be to make sure that you’re styling your hair before you go to bed. Putting your hair in loose braids can be a good idea to help protect your curls overnight. A high top knot can be a good idea too, if you don’t want to flatten or crimp your hair too much with braids. Then you can take it out in the morning and you should still have your hair’s natural volume, then you’re good to go.
Don’t Forget a Curling Iron
If you have curly hair then you might not think that you need a curling iron. But in many cases, it can help when you need a little pick-me-up, or want to define some of your curls even more. Some days one side of your hair just isn’t playing ball and looks less curly than the other, for instance. So a curling iron can play a part in helping you to even out your curls when you need to.
