And so many shampoos or conditioners try and sell you on what they are meant to help - blonde hair care, color-treated hair care, dry and damaged hair care, curly hair care, etc… but what happens if you are someone like me with natural curls, colored blonde that also happens to be dry? Which do you buy? It’s a bit of a guessing game. And let’s not even talk about how the weather of the place you live also impacts the way your hair acts and reacts to certain products!

Enter Prose - a totally customized approach to your specific hair needs. It starts with a survey in which through a series of questions you tell the brand about your hair. You also share your hair desires - for instance I’d like my curls to be curlier, more pronounced. Next you share your primary location so environmental factors can be considered. And lastly you share any additional things you want excluded from the mix. For instance, I asked for sulfate free shampoo to protect my curls. (Prose is already paraben free, chemical free, and all natural.)

With that information, the Prose scientists mix up a shampoo and conditioner that is perfect for your hair and its needs. A week later you have a new bottle of shampoo and conditioner, a hair mask too if you are interested, complete with directions on how to use the products effectively.

Okay, I admit, I was skeptical. $25 for a personalized bottle of shampoo? After three weeks of use, my skepticism has turned to belief.

During the first wash I noticed a few things - the products smell fresh without the fake overpowering ‘natural’ smell of a number of other shampoos and conditioners. When applying both the shampoo and conditioner, it feels different than the other shampoos I have used. Again, hard to explain, but I would say the conditioner especially felt more real and less plastic, if that makes any sense.

After the first wash, my hair felt smoother and smelled better than it had with the previous products I was using.

After several washes, I noticed my ringlets became a little more defined and also held their shape longer. (After the first couple washes they seemed frizzier, but I think it was my hair getting used to this new product.)

The hair mask is only meant to be used occasionally - applied 30 minutes before washing your hair in order to really allow the moisture to soak in. I have put it in my damp hair before an early morning run and followed with a shower a 45-minutes later. But I have also used it as a leave-in conditioner once a week, to give my hair a little extra love. (Curly, dyed hair is always on the dry side.)
