The Season of Giving and Giving Back

I’m in the midst of moving right now, with half of my worldly possessions stuffed into boxes or suitcases and the other half waiting for a similar fate. Packing and moving is nothing new to me. Since college, this is the 7th time I have packed up and moved. At least the last couple times have been in the same city. There were several years in which I was moving to a new city every two years.

For me, a big part of the packing process is purging. When you move often you begin to realize that you don’t need a lot of things and we tend to hold onto things longer than we should. So, as I pack I also purge - making a large pile of clothing and other items to donate to local causes and organizations.

To be honest, I try to be a little ruthless in my donation decisions; asking myself the following questions:

  • When was the last time I wore this? (If the answer is more than 9 months, it gets donated.)
  • Does this fit me? (If the answer is no, it gets donated.)
  • Do I have multiples of this item? (If the answer is yes, I pick the couple that I like the best and get rid of the rest.)
  • Have I replaced this with another but kept both? (If the answer is yes, it gets donated.)
  • Am I hanging onto something just because? (If the answer is yes, it gets donated.)
  • Is this item me and my style? (If the answer is no, it gets donated.)

Basically, I want a closet full of functional, wearable pieces that I want to put on daily. I don’t want to be hoarding pieces for the what-if moments. I don’t want to be hoping for the day I will fit into something, or dreading the day I fit back into something should I gain weight again. I don’t want to have 5+ of something when I only really could ever use one or two.

And I don’t want to have an excess while others are going without. So, I bag up the extra items - even the ones I may love but don’t need - and give them away. With Thanksgiving, Christmas and the cold weather approaching, there isn’t a better time in the year to give to those in need. Purging my closet is a great way to live this season of giving.

One of the areas that needed a serious purging this year was my workout clothes. Over the years and with my recent marathon training I have amassed quite a collection and I don’t need it all. So I took a look at the pieces and first got rid of anything that was old or worn. Next I kept only the pieces that I loved wearing and that were so my style - like this track jacket and these leggings from adidas. Everything else was bagged up and given away.

(Curious about these pieces? Find them here: Track Jacket, Track Pants, Sports Bra.

I’ll be honest, it can be a little overwhelming to go through and do a deep purging, but it is also really cleansing! Besides, who doesn’t want a closet filled with pieces that are just so you!?

I have to do a major purge after we go get the rest of my clothes out of storage. I’ve been rotating the same things for 2 years, and I need to replace a lot of it.

I’ll trash the stuff that is past it (most of what I am wearing now), and go through the rest, purging the too big (I’ve lost weight - about 5lb) and ‘WTH was I thinking?’ as I go. Then, next time I am in a place with shopping (14 hour drive away) I will take a list and replace what I need to.
