We all know someone who has aspirations of running a marathon. Maybe it is a pie-in-the-sky kind of dream right now, or maybe it is a 2020 goal. Either way, to successfully complete a marathon it first begins with the gear. So, if you have someone on your gift list who is looking to complete a marathon or is interested in attempting a few shorter races, check out my list of suggestions below. These are all things that helped me get up and running when I first began.

Cold Weather Clothing.
No matter when the marathon is, chances are they will need to begin running in the colder months. But running in the wrong kind of gear can be really difficult and a little disheartening. Look for cold-weather gear, which is usually indicated on the label. Also, consider a hat to keep you warm, and even gloves, if needed. Layers are also helpful. I often run in the winter months with both leggings and track pants just to stay warm and not catch a chill when I really start to sweat.

Personalized Shoes.
No. I don’t mean shoes made with the person’s name emblazoned on the side. But I do mean shoes made for the specific stride and needs of the runner. For instance, some people need a little extra cushioning for a run. Others prefer to have as little between their foot and the pavement as possible. For me, I like a thin gym shoe that is supportive without weighing me down. Right now I alternate between two pairs of the adidas Adizero Boston shoes. They are flexible and made for long-distance training.
Wireless Headphones.
For me, these were a game changer. As soon as I got rid of all the cords and such, it was so much easier to grab my headphones, my phone and hit the pavement. No need to worry about how to sting the headphone cords through your clothing so it isn’t in the way.

Running App.
To really be sure the miles are getting done, a running app is essential. There are many out there on the market, including the adidas Running by Runtastic. These apps can be used for a lot more than just mile tracking. They can also track the miles put on a specific pair of shoes, which helps avoid injury. They also have challenges and a community aspect in order to spur runners on to reach their goals and beyond.

Fitness Tracker/Smart Watch.
Okay, this one isn’t an essential. But it did change my whole workout game, which is why I’m including it. These trackers or watches don’t just track your mileage, but they also measure your heart rate, calories burned, etc… I’ve become a little obsessed with mine - challenging myself to hit certain move goals and track my total miles in a day or month. While running, many of these trackers can also indicate split times and average pace, to make sure the run is meeting the goal established at the start.
