Last week I had the chance to tour the newest 64,000-square-foot Pick ‘n Save location, on County Line Road in Menomonee Falls. This place is so new (it opened on January 14th) that it requires a map to navigate.

The former real estate writer in me (feels like a previous life at this point) was thrilled to learn all about the construction and the efforts that were taken to make the store more environmentally friendly. I was geeking out a little bit. For instance, the interior floor is all concrete, which means the cleaning routine will not require harsh chemicals.

The refrigeration system uses carbon dioxide, instead of some of the other less eco-friendly alternatives. “Our system is the first of its kind in Wisconsin to use carbon dioxide as its refrigerant,” said James Hyland, vice president of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications for Roundy’s, in a press release. “The system will reclaim the heat it generates by serving as a heating source for the store’s hot water.”

In addition to all the environmental construction pieces, the store also has a focus on organic. This location now carries 35% more organic items than most of the other Pick ‘n Save locations in the state. They even make fresh squeezed juice daily. (It was delicious.) True to the store’s latest mantra ‘New Every Day’ is a way of life at this store. They have new product coming in every single morning. The fruits and vegetables looked amazing - all of them.

The deli sells hamburger patties, sausages and brats that were made on location. Many of the pastries are made in store – and they have two different kinds of cake frosting. (YUM!) The soups and salads offered in the cases are all made in Kenosha. Oh, and you have to try the potpies.

Other bonuses… Each aisle has a marked section to help you better locate the organic items. For those with a gluten allergy, there is a large section full of a wide variety of items to make the meal creation process easier.

And like any good grocery store, you have the chance to sample some of the goodness offered. While there on the tour I tried fresh squeezed orange juice, potpie, popcorn, frosting and a cinnamon pastry; and this was before most of the little sample booths had a chance to be set up for the day.

The new store also has a café, a soup and sushi bar, and an amazing gourmet cheese selection.

Not only do they have fresh items daily, but getting a deal at Pick ‘n Save is also easy. You no longer have to worry about carrying a bunch of loose coupons in your purse or pocket. Now you can find coupons online and automatically load them onto your Fresh Perks card, so they are there are waiting when you get to the store and swipe your card! This load-to-card coupon idea is pretty sweet – right?! AND every Wednesday and Saturday you can use a print manufacturers’ coupon, which Pick ‘n Save will match (with some limitations) – so you save double those days.

If only Menomonee Falls wasn’t so far away from my home in Milwaukee! A shopping trip is not just a grocery run it’s an event.

Mmm, pastries. We don’t have Pick ‘n Save here in Michigan but that store looks pretty nice. Kroger and Meijer do that as well, where you can load coupons onto your card - saves some time.

This looks nothing like the Pick N’ Save I grew up with (now Bog Lots). I’d love to visit, this store reminds me of WinCo, it’s always great to be able to buy ingredients and staples in bulk as amazing prices!

Wow, I don’t even think that we have stores as big as that anywhere in Norway! Looks like one could easily spend the better part of the day there :)
