Last month, I stumbled across Dressember via Instagram. I was immediately taken with the pictures and the short but succinct bio: “Dressember uses fashion & creativity to end slavery. Dreamers + Doers welcome.” Sounded right up my alley. The Instagram account caught my attention and lead me to Dressember’s website, where I delved deeper into the mission and cause so dear to the founder and other Dressember members. The concept is simple and inspiting. A dress can help change the world. In the About Us section, they puts it this way…. “Dressember uses fashion to advocate for women who’ve been exploited for their femininity. The Dressember Foundation exists to inspire and empower a global community of like-minded women who are locking arms to face one of the greatest injustices of our time.” It’s dedicated to “opposing the worldwide trafficking and exploitation of women.” Pretty inspiring, right?!
Fast forward a month, a little outreach on my part, an application and then a selection process so that I am now one of 15 affiliates working directly with Dressember to draw attention to the cause. How are we going to do this? It’s pretty simple… Wear a dress every day in December to help create awareness for the modern tragedy of human trafficking. Simultaneous to this we’ll be raising money for the cause.
This is the third official year of the Dressember challenge. In 2013, the program has 1,233 registered participants in 32 countries, and raised more than $165,000! In 2014 the number of participants doubled and more than $465,000 was raised! Let’s see what this year has in store for Dressember.
Want to join me? There are several ways you can get involved…
- Become a Dressember advocate through this link.
- Take on the #Dressember challenge and post pics of you in a dress to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, whatever! (Tag it with #Dressember so others participating can see your outfit.)
- Talk, talk, talk to anyone and everyone who cares about the full human flourishing of every human being.
- Donate to help monetarily fight the slavery of women around the world.
Welcome to Dressember 2015! Here goes a month of fun, creative dress-inspired outfits, and doing something for a great cause! I’ll be posting a dress outfit every day to Instagram, and almost everyday here on the blog too. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with and how this month-long program will transform all of us, at least a little.
