How To Wear a Blanket Scarf

The latest winter trend is the blanket scarf. It’s often thicker and larger than a normal pashmina-style scarf, which makes it the perfect winter accessory, but it also makes styling it a bit of a challenge. Since I’m personally obsessed with this accessory right now, here’s a couple tips on how to wear a blanket scarf and rock this trend.

10 Ways to Wear a Blanket Scarf:

Keep It Basic. You can easily treat a blanket scarf as you would any other scarf. Wrap it around your neck once and let the ends fall down as they will. Simple, straightforward. Pair the scarf with a pair of jeans and an essential solid long-sleeved t-shirt or sweater.

Pattern Play. Go ahead and try to mix patterns to create a look. Most blanket scarves out there today are some plaid color combination. Look for a patterned top that will compliment the colors in your scarf but will still make a statement. Southern Curls and Pearls pulls this look off with style!

Artfully Draped. One of the things I love most about scarves is the dozens of ways they can be wrapped, draped, twisted and knotted to create varied looks. Go ahead and experiment with different ways of draping the scarf. The possibilities are endless. Bright Eyed Style nails the unconventional draped style.

Wrap It Up. While these are labelled scarves, they are so large, they can easily pull double duty as a wrap. To pull this off, open the scarf up wide and drape it over your shoulders, wind it around your arms and ta-da. Simple, easy, and oh-so-warm. I like to wear this style while teaching on the really cold days. Walk in Wonderland works both the Wrap it Up look and the pattern play.

Layered. The scarf can be just one more addition to your layered winter look. Consider adding it on top of a sweater but slightly under a jacket or vest. It will help keep you warm but still chic and even professional looking if that’s what you’re going for. Doesn’t Cute and Little pull this off really well?

Outerwear. The blanket scarf doesn’t just need to be a part of your indoor look. You can us the scarf as an outwear piece, wrapped around your neck and layered over your winter coat. They are so warm, it’s easy to see why they would be a good outdoor piece to have around. Just glancing at Glamour Zine‘s blog or Instagram account you’ll see she’s the queen of pulling off this look.

Hidden Ends. One of the most popular ways of wearing this trend is in a v-shape. This works well when you have a square scarf, rather than a rectangular one. Fold the scarf into a triangle and then wrap the end around your neck in opposite directions. Hide the ends in the fold of the scarf and you’ve got the v-shaped, hidden ends look, just like Something Beautiful.

Cascading. For a super simple, on-trend look, consider merely wrapping the scarf over the back of your neck and merely letting the ends cascade down. For a more striking look make sure the ends are uneven by holding on the one corner and running your hand over the scarf until you hit the middle. Wrap that around your neck to give the uneven cascading look. Personally, I love the way The Sweetest Thing pulls off this style.

Belt It. You can work the cascading look above, but for a variation on the look consider adding a belt. It will give you a more defined waist, which with the bulky scarf is something a lot of us want to give the allusion of. Covet and Acquire pulls off this look with style.

Knotted. There are a number of different ways you can knot a blanket scarf, so it’s worth experimenting with to find new ways that work for you. For instance, the cascade look above can be knotted in the middle to create one long drape in the middle. Or use the basic style and tie the ends into an artsy knot, like the adorable Corals and Cognac has done here.

I also love the look of a blanket scarf — or any scarf for that matter. I love the way a scarf makes you feel protected or something like that. Plaid is also my favorite this season.
Thanks for all the great ideas on how to wear it!

This is very helpful! Thank you so much! I often wear scarves and don’t really know what to do with them. I don’t have any blanket scarves yet but when I get them, I will probably wear the layered version most.
