Since I feel like I wear two hats having two professions (high school teacher and lifestyle blogger) that I try really hard to balance, dressing is always a challenge. I refuse to fall victim to the comfort mantra that I feel too many women, and especially too many teachers fall prey to. At the same time, I can’t exactly strut fashion blogger greatness as I lecture at the front of a classroom. It’s all about balance - a crucial balance between fashionable and practical.
My work style is certainly a little dressier than the average. I wear heels almost every day. I always have on makeup and jewelry. And even when it is not Dressember I am usually in a skirt or dress. The students will often comment about my dressy attire. Sometimes they will ask me if I am going somewhere after school, in order to justify my daytime attire. I’ve gotten good at responding by telling them that they are worth dressing up for; that I think it is important to look your best and dress accordingly at all times.
Besides, in my opinion, it’s always better to be a little overly dresses, a little fancier than the others. I’d rather people consider me one of the better dressed co-workers/teachers, than one of the worst dressed. In a recent student roast, my character was the one who walked in wearing 4-inch heels, a lovely lace maroon-colored dress and a great black leather jacket. I think she hit the nail on the head in terms of the way I dress.
